English Composition will introduce students to the basic structure and forms of academic essays. In order to improve upon their ability to develop and express ideas and write from life experiences, students will produce a variety of short compositions including a personal narrative, a descriptive essay, and a persuasive essay. Pre-writing and brainstorming strategies will be introduced, as well as developing thesis statements, introductions & conclusions, and transitioning between paragraphs. Please note that it is necessary to have familiarity with writing solid paragraphs as students will master the 5-paragraph structure of academic essays throughout this course.
From a parent: I can’t begin to express how thankful I am to both you and Mrs. Craig in teaching English. I did well in English in school, and even had a paper published in college (sample essay book). But for whatever reason, my ability to teach it just wasn’t there. By having you teach it, I am now able to coach and cheer, a role I am enjoying just as much. Thank you so much!

I appreciate that so much! Thank you for helping me to achieve such success in English and writing. I have never had an English teacher who took me this far in my journey as a writer, and I cannot thank you enough for how much you have helped me grow. Sadly, I believe this is the first and last class I will have with you. I will still be taking online classes, but they will be in different subjects. However, what you have taught me will always be at the forefront of my mind whatever future English-related assignments come up. Again, thank you for an amazing year; it means so much to me!
Thank you more than words can say for encouraging Rachel (and me) to keep going with writing and for providing such great tools and resources to help along the way (I am hooked on Google Docs and even started working with Sheets, too). 🙂 It was awesome to see Rachel gain skills and confidence in her writing. Thank you!! Those two little words don’t seem nearly enough, but please know they are filled with a heart full of gratitude.
My English professor got me an internship with University Relations, so I’m staying in Oklahoma over the summer. I’m loving my job: I get to write content for the OKWU website (promoting majors with new content and career research, writing features articles), update their graphic design, and edit the president’s grammar. It’s totally right up my alley, and I’m using the inverted pyramid almost every day. (Who woulda thunk?) Just wanted to once again express my gratitude for your help in igniting this fire for language and writing and editing. 🙂
On a side note, as he has been doing the grammar exercises you’ve assigned in the SRN, I’ve noticed less punctuation errors in his papers. Very thankful for that and for your class in general. Luke enjoys it, and I’m seeing a lot of growth in his writing.

Listening to “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” during Advent has been such a blessing. I had never read it! On my! What a beautiful book! Austin has enjoyed it too.
