This is a two-year course that alternates between Year A (ancients) and Year B (middle ages). Students may begin with either year or only complete one year before moving on to Middle School English 2. Completing both years builds the strongest foundation, but older students may enroll in one year to allow time to complete Middle School English 2 prior to high school. Middle School English A and B can be completed in any order.
Middle School English 1 teaches students how to study and understand literature, how to write effective, intriguing paragraphs, and how to apply grammar in context. The booklist includes age-appropriate retellings of famous tales and stories that introduce students to historical eras.
Each year students will sharpen their writing skills whether they have little previous experience or prefer to tackle more challenging assignments; students will be taught by an IEW-accredited writing instructor and will be graded according to their ability. Students use the appropriate grammar text: Fix-It! Book 1 for first-year students and Fix-It! Book 2 for second-year students.
You’re my best teacher. – Esther T, English 2
Mrs. Craven, I just wanted to thank you for always having the class assignments up for the week by Monday. It really makes my week easier when I can schedule all class assignments at once. – Carolyn, English 2 and English B parent
“Gene and I were gone all day yesterday, so when we got home, I told her I got a message from you telling me she “”rocked”” English class yesterday. What a beautiful confident smile she gave me. Thank you for being such an encouragement to her. She has also loved the books she has read for class so far this year. She is not my reader, but she finished all the books early because she enjoyed them so much. She has asked for the rest of the books in the series. Blessings, Carolyn
