Online Homeschool English Class Rhiannon Appelgrijn Academy at Bright Ideas Pressa note from Rhiannon:

“I have been married for sixteen years, and we have three lovely, nutty kiddos! I love teaching online because it has allowed me to remain a stay-at-home mom while reentering the workforce. My teaching career began quite accidentally in 2001 while my husband and I were pursuing a music career. I was working at a local charter school instructing drama and chorus classes when the Vice Principal walked up to me looking desperate and said he needed someone to cover the ninth grade AP English class. He handed me a textbook and ran off before I could fully protest. English had always been my best subject in school so I figured I could handle it for awhile. Much to my surprise, I was hooked! I became the permanent substitute for that class as well as a few other English classes. I decided to go back to school, and I earned my B.A. in British and American Literature. That frazzled Vice Principal changed my life!

My husband and I formed a Christian Rock band when we were first married, and we had the opportunity to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio for the 2001 MTV Summer Concert Series. In 2004, our band played for the Presidential rally in Sims Park, FL, and I sang the national anthem right before President George W. Bush took the stage. I walked by me on his way to the podium, so I reached out and patted him in the back:) Around this same time, we made the decision to shift our focus to worship leading, and that is what we’ve been doing ever since. We love it!

Some of my favorite hobbies (besides singing) are swimming with my kids, writing (worship songs, poems, stories, skits), making crafts of any kind, sculpting polymer clay to make jewelry, painting, playing piano really poorly, and having tea parties.“

What others are saying about Rhiannon

“I truly enjoyed the class, and you did an amazing job teaching us and encouraging us. It was definitely one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken. I know that each person in the class has gained so much and is more enthusiastic about reading and writing. (Several of us are already discussing starting a book club together.) You are such a gifted teacher and I am blessed to have been your student. I love that you are willing to apply books in a Biblical manner and that you never make assumptions and dig deeper into something that appears simple. The skills that I gained for you will benefit me in more areas than literature alone. Thank you! Also, your brightness, joy, and enthusiasm are contagious. There are going to be many students who will gain so much from you. Mrs. Appelgrijn, it has been an absolute joy to be a part of your class. I will definitely miss it and you. Thank you so much for offering this class and being so caring and loving!” – Student, Intro to Literary Analysis

I am going to miss being in your class so much!!” – Student, Intro to Literary Analysis

She’s a darn good teacher is all I have to say…I’ve never seen anyone engage teens like she does. Not only that, they love her classes, her overall respect and kindness for them. I appreciate that she doesn’t talk down to them, and holds them accountable too.” – Parent, Intro to Literary Analysis
